Trump’s government to deploy Border Patrol agents to Charlotte

(MENAFN) The Trump administration is reportedly planning to send US Border Patrol agents to Charlotte, North Carolina, and New Orleans as part of an expanded federal law enforcement presence in American cities, according to reports. Officials familiar with the plans said deployments are still being finalized.

Border Patrol agents are also expected to continue operations in the Chicago area, where a two-month enforcement campaign has led to thousands of arrests and repeated confrontations between federal agents and local residents. The operations have occasionally involved the use of force, including tear gas and pepper spray, and agents were reportedly fired upon by an unidentified assailant last Saturday, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Chicago enforcement efforts have drawn judicial attention. Last week, US District Judge Sara L. Ellis restricted the agency’s use of crowd-control weapons, describing prior actions as “shocking the conscience,” and mandated that agents wear body cameras.

Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, declined to comment on the planned operations in Charlotte and New Orleans, stating only that “every day, D.H.S. enforces the laws of the nation across the country.”

President Trump has repeatedly cited a “crime problem” in New Orleans and indicated intentions for a federal presence there, while Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry has requested deployment of the National Guard to the state.
